In terms of student numbers, the Michigan City Area Schools is the largest school district in La Porte County. The largest school in the district is the Michigan City High School, a state-of-the-art, four-year public high school. Its mascot is a blue and gold marlin.

    The South Shore and South Bend Railroad offers direct service to Michigan City. The station is located near the former Michigan Central Railroad depot. The railroad is 142 miles long and makes five stops along the way.

    Shopping malls
    Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Michigan City, Indiana, is a town that abounds with opportunity for the savvy shopper. With an array of retail outlets to choose from, whether you’re looking for an antique vases, a new sound system or a high-tech gadget, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. The town is also near several other enticing destinations, such as the Indiana Dunes State Park. It is also only about 60 miles from Chicago.

The area also offers the usual suspects in the shopping arena, from Walmart to Macy’s, so you’re sure to find something for the family or yourself.

    Public schools in Michigan City
    Located 50 miles east of Chicago, Michigan City, Indiana, is a relatively new town that quickly grew into a midwestern central living area. It has a population of approximately 30,614. Located on Lake Michigan, the town is a good place to live if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city while still having easy access to all of the amenities the area has to offer. The best part is that the city is affordable to live in, with a median home price of approximately $90,200.

    The city is home to 12 public schools. They serve approximately 5,317 students in grades pre-K through 12. The city also boasts one private school, serving 297 students in grades pre-K through 12.

    In fact, the Michigan City Area Schools have a proud history that goes back to the mid-nineteenth century. The school district currently operates eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.

    Public schools in La Porte County
    Hundreds of LaPorte County men volunteered for military service during the Civil War. During the war, Michigan City became a major troop shipping point. Many LaPorte County factories thrived under wartime pressure.

    La Porte County was once a place of great natural diversity. It was surrounded by tallgrass prairie and dense hardwood forests. The first settlers lived in log cabins and farmed small patches of ground.

    Railroads made travel easier, allowing raw materials and new industries to flourish. Railroads also formed a common network linking areas of the United States. The Haskell-Barker Car Company began operation in the 1850s. During this period, the Northern Indiana State Prison was also located in Michigan City. It provided a cheap labor pool.

    The railroads also made the raw materials of LaPorte County more accessible. This was the beginning of the process of tying the United States together. The railroads created new industries in Michigan City. They also brought more jobs to LaPorte County.
